I knew three months into crushing leaves beneath our new converse
that I would die of cancer because of her.
the inside of my lungs still reeks of
goodwill sweaters drenched in cheap cologne,
pretending like it masked the smell
while we admired the seasonal smattering of orange
from the front seat of her car,
on our way to cough in some place new
